Dr Jai P Narain is a public health professional with over 40 years of national and international experience, a global health adviser, outbreak investigation specialist, health writer and a mentor. Presently, Senior Visiting Fellow at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia, and among others also associated with Indian Council of Medical Research as Chair, National Working Group on NCD surveillance, and with Indian Assn of Parliamentarians on Population & Development as a member of technical advisory group.
Served at theWorld Health Organization (WHO)from 1988 till retirement in 2012 in various capacities including Regional Adviser and Director in the Regional Office for South East Asia for Communicable diseases, Head of STI and HIV program at Caribbean Epidemiology Centre of Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and coordinator HIV/TB research at WHO HQ in Geneva. In those capacities, assisted many countries inAmericas, Africa and Asia in planning, implementation and evaluation of various communicable disease programs.
Prior to joining WHO, served at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, Indian Council of Medical research, and at National Institute of Communicable Diseases, Delhi (now NCDC). Between 2012-15, assisted the Government of India as Senior Adviser (2012-15) in launching the India Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) program at National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), working closely with US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (US CDC). Obtained MBBS and MD (Preventive & Social Medicine) degrees from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, and MPH and MS (Epidemiology and Trop Public Health) degrees from Harvard University, School of Public health, Boston. From 1981 to 1983, was an EIS Officer/international exchange visitor atUS CDC. In 1975, contributed towards the global eradication of Smallpoxas Junior Medical officer while posted in the state of Bihar.
Published more than 120 scientific papers and wrote/edited 8 books on various communicable diseases. Guest editor of special issue eachof Bull of WHO, Journal of Health Management (twice), IJMR, J of Communicable Diseases, Indian J of Public Health, International J of Non-communicable Diseases, and WHO South-East Asia J of Public Health (founding editor).
